WASHINGTON, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Retail sales in the United States fell 0.5 percent in June, the second consecutive monthly drop, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.
The decline followed an even larger 1.1 percent fall in May and was larger than economists had expected.
Last month, much of the weakness came from auto sales which declined 2.3 percent. Excluding autos, retail sales were down a smaller 0.1 percent in June.
Total sales for April through June were up 6.8 percent from the same period a year ago.
Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of economic activity, is the broad measure of U.S. economic activity.
